Reconciliation in Action
As of May 2022, West Coast Expeditions is now owned by the Ka:'yu:'k't'h' / Che:k:tles7et'h' (Kyuquot/Checleset) First Nations through their Group of Businesses! This momentous step - as part of WCE's 50th anniversary - supports the Nations' trajectory for autonomy and opportunity within their territory. This helps to ensure that WCE and ecotourism become an integrated part of the Nations' vision and many initiatives toward sustainable economic and cultural/community development. "We have been gently working toward this for years," says former co-owner, Dave Pinel, who is now in a key consulting role, together with his wife and former co-owner Caroline Fisher, overseeing a full summer season for WCE and supporting the transition. Their former business partner, Bev Michel, a Ka:'yu:'k't'h' woman and local resident, is shifting into a more active role managing the company. Together, they're working with a full roster of returning staff plus additional supports to enhance infrastructure, systems, and relevant cultural and community interactions. "The timing is right for this to be a win for everyone", notes Pinel, who is appreciating the positive collaboration and excitement around this acquisition and change, as part of the Nations' story forward. |
